Why should someone contribute to The Gulf Coast Rep?
That's a great question. I get sent tons of requests to donate to projects and organizations. Obviously, you can't donate to all of them, and you have to pick and choose. I guess my pitch for us is, "We're doing something unique and different. We're literally giving birth to new work." Whether or not the project moves forward or not, it's the process that matters the most. Giving writers and composers the opportunity to see the words from the page reach the stage. Plus, we're focused on education. To me, that's a huge tipping point for someone on the fence about contributing. Our goal is put theatre in front of as many young people as possible. Finally, the Arts are a vital part of our humanity. They enhance communities and help them thrive.
What about people who don't live here? Why should they contribute if they're not a member of the community?
Of course we are rooted in our Gulf Coast community. We are a firm believer in local stakeholders to what we're trying to accomplish, but as a regional theatre, we also see ourselves as part of the growing fabric of American Theatre. The development of new work contributes to a larger picture than just our little speck on the map. We welcome contributions and sponsorships from people from all over the world who want to be a part of the development of new work.
What are the funds used for?
92% of the funds go directly into the development of new work and productions. We are fortunate to have a substantial amount of great talent in the Gulf Coast region. Paying our actors, designers, production crew, and directors enables us to employ and support working artists. Having a healthy budget for production allows us to continually strive for high quality in every aspect of the experience for our audiences. A portion of our capital fundraising campaign dollars will be used toward sound, lighting, and other technical aspects to make our goal for a truly immersive experience a reality.
